May 17 was the inaugural Back Of Beyond Stand Up Paddle Boarding Race just outside of Moab, UT. Paddle Moab was lucky enough to be the main sponsor for this brand new stand up paddle boarding event. The race was a first for the area, and it was so successful, racers were already making plans to come back next year. The weather was a comfortable 85 degrees and the river was flowing at 13,000 CFS.
The Back Of Beyond Stand UP Paddle Boarding Race is open to all levels of paddlers, including youth 12 and older. It took place on the Colorado River and started at the historic Dewey Bridge. Racers had to paddle 7 miles downriver through what is known as “post card alley”. Hittle Bottom was the finish line and staging area, where a great post race party followed. This year’s race had a total of 42 participants in a men’s, women’s and youth open class divisions.
